Turfing
Turfing in Dundee
Ardilla Landscapes lays new lawns across Dundee and the surrounding area. We handle everything from clearing the existing surface and levelling the ground to supplying and laying the turf. When we leave, the lawn is laid and ready to establish.
A new lawn only holds up if the ground underneath is prepared properly. We do not skip that step. Soil is cleared, broken up where needed, and graded to ensure water drains away from the house. The turf goes down on a solid, even base.
What's Included
What We Include in Every Turfing Job
Turf laid on poorly prepared ground will not root well and will not last. It might look fine at first, but it settles unevenly, drains badly, and struggles to establish. Here is what we do on every job.
Surface clearance
We clear the existing surface before anything else. Old turf, overgrown growth, and debris are removed and taken away. You do not need to clear anything before we arrive.
Soil preparation
We break up compacted soil, remove large stones and roots, and work the top layer into a fine tilth. This gives the new turf the best possible chance to root quickly and evenly.
Grading and levelling
We level the area and grade it so the surface drains properly. A flat lawn that holds standing water in wet weather is a problem. We make sure water moves away from the house and off the lawn.
Turf supply and laying
We supply and lay quality turf across the full area in tight, butted rows with staggered joins. Edges are cut cleanly to the borders and paths.
Establishment advice
A new lawn needs watering regularly in the first few weeks while it roots into the ground. We give you straightforward guidance on what to do when we leave so the lawn establishes well.
All waste removed
All lifted material and waste is taken away when we leave. The garden is clean and the new lawn is the only thing left.

Why Choose Ardilla
Turf That Roots and Lasts
A lot of turfing jobs fail because the preparation is skipped or rushed. Turf laid on compacted, unlevelled, or poorly cleared ground will not root properly and will not last. We take the preparation seriously on every job because it is what determines whether the lawn is still looking good in three years.
Ardilla Landscapes is a family business based in Dairsie, Fife. Our own team covers Dundee every day. We do not subcontract turfing work out. The people who quote the job are the people who do it.
- Full ground preparation on every job
- Turf supplied and laid by our own team

New Turf Aftercare
Watering in the first two weeks
Water once or twice a day in dry weather. The ground should stay moist to the touch but not waterlogged. Early morning is best. In wet Scottish weather, you may not need to water at all.
First mow
Wait until the turf has rooted before mowing. Test by gently pulling a corner. If it resists, it is ready. Set the mower blade high for the first cut and do not take off more than a third of the blade length.
Foot traffic
Keep heavy foot traffic off the lawn for three to four weeks while the roots establish. Light use is fine after four weeks. Normal use after six weeks.
Feeding
Apply a lawn feed four to six weeks after laying once the turf has rooted. A feed helps the roots establish and gives the lawn a boost going into the growing season.
We go through this with you when we finish the job.

Common Questions
Turfing FAQs
- What is the best time of year to lay turf in Dundee?
- Turf can be laid almost any time of year in Scotland, but spring and autumn are ideal. The cooler, wetter conditions help the turf root without drying out. Summer laying is possible but requires more watering. We will advise you on timing when you get in touch.
- How long does it take for new turf to root?
- Most turf will start to root within two to three weeks if watered correctly. You should avoid heavy foot traffic for at least three to four weeks while the roots establish. We will give you specific guidance on aftercare when the job is done.
- Do you offer artificial grass as well as real turf?
- Yes, we can lay artificial grass. We are honest about it though: for most gardens, real turf is better value, looks more natural, and does not have a fixed lifespan. Artificial grass has a higher upfront cost and is not right for every space. If you are weighing it up, call us and we will talk through which makes more sense for your garden.
- Do you remove the old lawn before laying new turf?
- Yes. We clear the existing surface, prepare the ground properly, and then lay the new turf. We do not lay over an existing lawn. Skipping the preparation is what causes turfing jobs to fail.
- How do you price a turfing job?
- We visit the site, measure the area, and give you a written fixed-price quote. We do not give firm prices over the phone without seeing the ground conditions. Site visits are free and we attend the next day.
