Garden Gravelling and Aggregate in Dundee

Ardilla Landscapes lifts old lawns and lays gravel and aggregate across gardens in Dundee and the surrounding area. If you have a lawn you cannot or do not want to maintain any more, we take it back to bare ground, prepare the base properly, lay a quality weed membrane, and finish with your chosen stone. One team, clean site at the end.

We also gravel existing beds and borders for people who want to cut down on weeding. A properly laid membrane and a good depth of aggregate keeps weeds suppressed for years. We have completed garden gravelling jobs across Dundee, Broughty Ferry, Perth, and Angus.

What's Included

What We Include in Every Gravelling Job

Cheap gravel work looks fine for a season then shifts, weeds through, and ends up worse than what was there before. The difference is in what goes underneath. Here is what we include as standard.

Lawn or surface removal

We lift and remove the existing lawn, turf, or old bed material. Everything is taken away and disposed of responsibly. You do not need to clear anything before we arrive.

Ground preparation

We prepare and level the ground properly before anything goes down. This is the step that determines how the finished surface holds up over the years.

Weed membrane

A quality woven membrane goes down across the whole area before the stone. It suppresses weeds without preventing drainage. This is what makes gravel low maintenance rather than just different maintenance.

Edging

Where needed, we fit clean steel or timber edging to hold the stone in place and give the finished area a sharp edge. This keeps gravel out of your lawn, path, or borders.

Aggregate supply and laying

We supply and lay your chosen stone at the correct depth across the full area. We can advise on stone type if you are not sure what suits your garden and property.

All waste removed

Every job ends with a clean site. We take away all lifted turf, excavated material, and any old membrane or edging. Nothing is left for you to deal with.

Why Gravel?

A Garden You Do Not Have to Maintain

A lot of the gardens we gravel belong to people who have reached the point where cutting the grass is more hassle than it is worth. Whether that is down to age, health, time, or simply preference, gravel is the most practical solution. Once it is down properly, with a membrane underneath and edging around the edges, there is very little to do.

We also gravel flower beds and borders where weeds have become a problem. A good depth of stone over a woven membrane cuts down weeding dramatically. It does not eliminate it entirely, but it reduces it to almost nothing compared with bare soil.

  • No mowing, no edging, no seasonal maintenance
  • Weed membrane suppresses growth from below
  • Drains naturally, no standing water
  • Handles Scottish frost without cracking or lifting
  • Can be topped up rather than fully replaced
  • Suits Dundee sandstone properties well

Common stone choices

Pea gravel

Smooth and rounded. Comfortable underfoot, popular for garden areas and paths.

Golden gravel

Warm colour that works well alongside traditional Dundee sandstone.

Slate chippings

Dark and angular. Good drainage, suits modern or contemporary gardens.

Grey granite

Neutral and hard-wearing. Works across most garden styles and settings.

Not sure which stone suits your garden? We will bring samples to the site visit and advise based on your property, the light, and how the area will be used.

Common Questions

Gravelling and Aggregate FAQs

Can you gravel over an existing lawn?
Yes. We lift the existing lawn first rather than laying over it. Gravelling over turf without removing it leads to an uneven surface and significantly worse weed control. We clear everything back to bare ground, prepare the base, lay membrane, then lay your stone on top.
Will a membrane actually stop the weeds?
A quality woven membrane laid properly will suppress the vast majority of weed growth from beneath. Some airborne seeds will still land on top of the gravel and need to be dealt with, but this is minimal compared to a bed with bare soil. The membrane is the most important part of the job.
How long does a garden gravelling job take?
Most garden gravelling jobs in Dundee are completed in a single day. Larger areas or jobs with more material to clear may take two days. We agree a clear start date with you, arrive on time, and finish the job before we leave.
What depth of gravel do you lay?
For garden areas and borders, we typically lay around 40mm depth of stone. This is enough to suppress weeds and give a clean, finished look without being excessive. We assess the ground conditions when we visit and advise on the right depth for your job.
Does gravel need much upkeep after it is laid?
Gravel is low maintenance, not zero maintenance. You may need to rake it back into shape once or twice a year and top it up every few years as it settles and disperses. Installed correctly with a membrane and edging, it needs very little work compared to a lawn or bare beds.
